The Red Cross movement began on the battlefield. Today, that same spirit is present in American Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Services provided to active duty, Reserve and National Guard personnel and their families. In just the last year, the Red Cross assisted over 475,000 families with emergency communications and 12,781 families with access to emergency financial assistance. To provide this emergency support network, the Red Cross sustained a team of 39,000 volunteers and 406 paid staff in 1,248 chapters across the United States and 115 stations serving 569 military
The American Red Cross also provides a number of community-based services. In 1999 the Red Cross mobilized relief to the victims of more than 60,000 domestic disasters, continued to be the primary supplier of lifesaving blood and blood products in the United States, trained more than 11.7 million people in vital lifesaving skills, provided direct health services to 2.5 million people and assisted international disaster and conflict victims in more than 20 countries.
There is much you can do to help. Here are just a few ways to aid the American Red Cross in its mission to help make families and communities safer at home and around the world.

Make an Organ Donation. Make a Tissue Donation. Thousands of people wait desperately for an organ or tissue transplant.
